The advancement of the English and Welsh wine industries over the past decade have been enormous, with more widespread professionalism and expertise and a greater understanding of how to make wine in what can be a very challenging climate. Whilst most press attention has been focussed on the sparkling wines, of which our range are detailed on page 55, crisp aromatic dry whites of a style similar to those of the Loire are also made at a surprisingly high quality. The grape variety Bacchus is rightly seen as the most exciting in these shores and whilst some wines tend to lightness and herbaceousness, the best have grassy, peppery fruit and a broad texture. Whilst wine from these shores is unlikely to ever be the cheapest in the world, it can justifiably now be said to offer good value. |
