Portugal

Back to the Europe map

For those not scared of experimentation, Portugal offers one of the most rewarding voyages of wine discovery in Europe. Most of the wines are made from indigenous varieties that are often of superb quality but never seen beyond Iberia. Forget preconceptions that this is a hot country so the reds will be big, powerful and stewed and the whites over alcoholic and blowsy. Outside of the (very hot and dry) Alentejo, the red wines are fresh and pure, with delicious fruit and spice flavours and a great affinity for food, whilst the whites are crisp, floral and aromatic. New to our list are a range of wines from the Lisbon area that showcase the range and quality now available.
