Italy

Back to the Europe map

Wine culture is perhaps more embedded in Italy than in any other country, even France. A meal here without wine is almost unthinkable and it is in this that the key to appreciating Italian wine rests. Many of the whites can seem a little neutral when in a beauty parade next to fruit packed and flashy new world whites, but pair them with food and suddenly their qualities become apparent. Likewise the reds, which are often quite acidic and with solid structure, all the better for cleansing your palate ready for the next mouthful of food. Whilst there are more and more ‘modern’ wines being made that are supple, fruity and easy to appreciate, Italy also still produces a diverse range of some of the best wines for the table and it is in this context that the greatest of them should be judged.
