Austria continues to be something of an enigma for the UK wine trade. The wines made here are unquestionably great, yet they remain an uphill struggle to sell to the consumer. Whether this is through a lack of knowledge, the idea that they are like German wine, which has troubles of its own, or because there is some lingering distrust from the 1980’s ‘antifreeze’ scandal is difficult to say, but it remains a sadness for those of us who have derived great pleasure from the wines that they do not receive a wider audience.
