Australia remains number one for total wine imports to the UK, however this is still driven by own label and branded wine sales on the high street. The latest data shows Australia in only third place in the on-trade, with only a quarter of the market share held by France. The good news is that the decade long drought has been alleviated somewhat during the past year, the bad news is the continued strength of the Australian dollar, which has pushed up prices by another 15% during the last year. With total production down by around 17% since 2008, there is no longer a large surplus of wine and whilst this might mean an end to very cheap offerings, it should help the industry focus more on the undoubted quality that is available. Whilst big, oaky and sweet tasting wines are still being made, it has been noticeable in the last few years that the better producers have been focussing on more elegant styles of wine and emphasising the regional differences that exist in this vast country. These wines are far more suited to food and it is perhaps time that the on-trade started looking more seriously at what is on offer.
