The last year has seen continued improvement in the wines of Argentina, although upward pressure on prices is filtering through to the market. Having recently tasted through a wide range of premium offerings, I can’t help but be optimistic for the future of Argentine wines. Whilst many wines show slightly clumsy handling and a sense that the winemaker is trying too hard to impress, the inherent quality of the fruit often shines through and it can only be a matter of time until many truly world class offerings are being made. Reflecting this, we have added extensively to our range this year. Malbec and Argentina have become a strongly established pairing in the eyes of the public and we are now offering a wider range of styles and qualities. In the long term, Syrah and Pinot Noir both show great potential and whilst the Pinots tasted this year didn’t quite make the grade, I am sure they will soon. The best whites of Argentina are a revelation, showing an aromatic purity and finesse not usually associated with the new world.
